I have such a headache
Seriously. Nails-being-pounded-into-my-skull kind of headache.
We went and looked at the house again on Friday and loved it, loved it, loved it. We were ready and willing to make an offer right then and there, but our realtor said she didn't have any time to do it until Monday, so we scheduled an appointment for today at 3. On Saturday we started fixing up our current place to get it ready to be put on the market. By Sunday we were having serious second thoughts. Looking at similar houses that have been sold recently in the same price range, we should be expecting a lot more than what this house would give us. Although it's bigger and way cooler on the inside (by the way, the pictures online don't do it justice) than our current place, both this house and the other would require approximately the same amount of refurbishing, just in completely different capacities. We ultimately decided we might as well just stay here and work on this place. So we cancelled our appointment.
And then had second thoughts.
Dave and I just had a long conversation on the phone. We've come to the conclusion that we're not particularly happy with either house, hence all the vacillating between the two. There aren't a lot of areas/towns around here that we would want to move to, and within the areas we would like to go, there aren't many houses that knock our socks off. We're feeling kind of stuck. I told Dave the only choice we have is for him to get a great job in Boston so we can move back to our beloved Salem and leave the nightmare of Central PA behind us, but after pausing a moment to chew wistfully on that thought, we decided that a better plan of action would be to start paying a lot more into the principal of our current place and next Spring (at which point Dave will hopefully have tenure) really start to look around.
Frankly if we don't find anything here next year, I'm going to start stumping for this place.

Gee, there's a nice place on my street up for sale. No view of the harbor though...

I thought at least one place on your street advertised a lake view once. Don't they all have that? :P

I forgot about that lake side cottage setting advertisement! Hee, what a joke that was!

There's this great house over on Meadow Lane for sale, I heard the owners SO want to make a deal and get out . . . jk. I don't think I'd buy a Cape again so I wouldn't say you should buy it either! Plus, your house right now has more character anyway. Keep your eyes open, something terrific will show up at some point that will be worth moving for!

oh the dithering you do. I feel for you, being stuck in the middle is no fun. I think the best way to get out of the funk you are feeling is to do some fun project on your house now. It is a great place and you have things you have been wanting to do. It could help you stay where you are. Selfishly, I am glad to still have you within walking distance.

Stuck in the middle does stink. Thus, I'm going blonde, because now I need *some* sort of drastic change in my life since we're not moving and it might as well involve my hair, and we have an architect coming next week Thursday to discuss renovation options for our house.

Okay, so I was trying to catch up chronologically, and I posted a "good luck" on your last post. Just an outside observation, but what kind of realtor doesn't have time to take an offer on a house right then and there. I apologize if said realtor reads this blog, but it takes minutes and could mean thousands... However, I understand your reservations. If we had stayed in Lewisburg, I would never have moved out of downtown. We currently live "in town" in Boone, but just put an offer on a house "downtown". It must be the Philly in us. Lastly, I LOVE your house and your property has soooo much potential for expansion. I am interested to hear what the possibilities are there.

Our realtor's pretty savvy. I have a feeling she wanted us to wait for a reason, but that we threw her a curveball by ultimately deciding not to go for it.
I'm looking forward to hearing what an architect has to say as well. One nice thing is we'll be able to tell her that we love bungalow's so this might be a way to get our dream bungalow without having to wait for the one on 5th street to go on the market.
Congrats on having your offer accepted. Send pictures!

Now if only we could do a remodel so that we could put a couch in the kitchen...
