Not your Grandma's 911

Last week I was surfing through the Netflix Instant Queue offerings on the Roku and through a series of highly choreographed and complicated maneuvers* ended up on a British comedy called "The IT Crowd". I have a soft spot for computer geeks, after all, I did marry one, so I figured I'd check it out. Last Friday, I watched the first episode, then immediately watched the next. I stopped there because I knew I needed to be watching them with Dave. Since then, we've blazed through all of Series 1 and 2, somehow managing to limit ourselves to two episodes a night.

The second episode of Series 1 is one of the funniest 23 minutes I've ever seen on TV. There's a bit that has a catchy little tune that stays in your head, and yesterday, in an effort to purge it from my mind, I found the clip on youtube. Unfortunately, Henry overheard the song and came running in, asking what I was watching. I showed him, and he then insisted on watching it over and over again. The result is I now have a completely useless string of numbers memorized and the jingle is permanently lodged in my cranium. It was the last thing I hummed last night and the first thing I sang this morning. Someone, please help.

If you think you can resist, go ahead and watch. I dare you.

*I can't believe that's how you spell maneuvers. Isn't there an "o" in there somewhere?

To prove Jenn's point about being a geek...so apparently our brains are wired to find prime numbers especially distinctive, and perhaps even susceptible to suggestion (think of a number between 1 and 50 but don't choose something obviously guessable like 1 or 50, but something a bit harder. Are you done? You chose thirtyseven). So I couldn't help but wonder if the IT emergency number might be prime, which would naturally help explain the inescapable, mind-numbing catchiness of an otherwise perfectly ridiculous number - although if only Ramanujan was alive he would know something truly incredible about it. But according to at least one prime number calculator on the web, it unfortunately is not a flippin prime number.

That was hilarious! I'm glad the kids are outside or I might have it stuck in my head forever too ... and yes, maneuvers can be spelled with an "o" as well, just an alternate spelling "manoeuver". But as we're in the US, spellcheck hates us. ;-)

Oops, it's actually "manoeuvre" - I switched my "re" at the end! I hope your finger is feeling better now!

I must really not be a computer geek because I can't remember the tune or the number to save my life.

Ha...I just got my own joke.

I chose 23.

23! Brilliant! Take that, Dave.

Ha ha - the last laugh is mine because 23 is prime!

David, do you run a program to test for prime? All the online sites I find can't handle the number on my computer --- it's got too many digits.

I'll never tell...

This might explain the whirring sound that Dave was making the other night.

Also, Megan, I just got your joke. Yes, it took that long.

Jenn, you and your pop are so much alike.
